Overview
The Council on Higher Education (CHE) is an independent statutory body established in terms of the Higher Education Act. Its mandate is to advise the Minister of Higher Education and Training on all matters relating to higher education and to ensure quality assurance within the higher education system in South Africa.
The CHE is responsible for quality promotion, accreditation of higher education programmes, institutional audits, and setting standards through its permanent sub-committee, the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC). It evaluates both public and private higher education institutions to ensure that teaching, learning, assessment, and governance meet national standards.
Through its advisory and quality assurance roles, the Council on Higher Education contributes to the credibility, integrity, and continuous improvement of South Africa’s higher education sector, supporting skills development and national development priorities.
