Overview
The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is a national public entity established in terms of the Companies Act. It functions as South Africa’s official regulator for company registration, intellectual property administration, and compliance monitoring within the corporate sector.
CIPC is responsible for the registration and maintenance of companies, close corporations, cooperatives, and non-profit entities. It also administers intellectual property rights, including trademarks, patents, designs, and copyright registrations. In addition, the Commission oversees statutory compliance requirements such as annual returns, beneficial ownership disclosures, and amendments to company records.
Through its regulatory role, CIPC supports economic participation, legal certainty, and transparency in the business environment. Its services are central to business formation, governance, and protection of intellectual property rights, making it a foundational institution in South Africa’s commercial and regulatory landscape.
